This is exactly what Barbara Bush said to Larry King about the people packed into the Astrodome.

What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is that they all want to stay in Texas. Everybody is so overhwelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (chuckle)–this is working very well for them.

My brother was there Friday; he said it looked like Calcutta and that they were short on lots of supplies. The 2001 FEMA report specifically talked about hundreds of thousands evacuated to Houston; apparently they weren’t very ready for this despite the warning. Harris County chief Judge Eckels is a longtime Bush family crony, as was his father; he controls the Astrodome and was the person turning away carloads of people who arrived looking for help.
