Subject: My Hurricane Story — Aenida Fortmayer missing in Belle Chasse

Story: Aenida “Gonzie” Fortmayer and her elderly sister may still be in their attic at 111 Victoria in Belle Chasse. No word from them in over a week. Pls check on them. Their address was left with Plaquemines Sheriff before the storm. Household includes many cats.

Pls contact me with any word. Many friends across country are eager for news.

Gonzie is one of just four survivors of the first Women’s Army Air Corps units formed during WWII. They were a tight bunch then, serving vital support functions for the military–and playing together on the softball and basketball teams. After some years of separation, during which they scattered across the country and raised families, they reunited in their retirement years.

Gonzie and her sister, Juanita, are both widows, sharing the home Gonzie and her husband built after “the war.” They are local celebrities of sorts – known as the “Boomtown Girls,” featured in TV commercials and billboards for the Boomtown Casino. They are, as my mother says, “real characters.”

Injured woman, child need to leave Kenner
Name: Laurie Crowe
Home: 530 275 5541
BR Number: 225.266.3356
Email: lcrow5541@charter.net

Staci Rossbach at 2850 Idaho ave in Kenner has with her an 11 year old daughter and no means to evacuated (no working car, broken foot) She has been told that all shelters have been closed.

Per phone conversation with Kenner PD, they are not evacuating it is up to the person to find their own transportation. I am sure there are many more people who would leave but cannot and they too will be among the dead.

We heard from her since Wed. she received medical care and went back to
the apartment because that is where she felt the safest (she was robbed at
one of the shelters) she was ready to leave and her van broke down Thurs.
night I talked to her and she was very hopeless.

As of Fri morning she was still in the apt. the police told her to walk out which of course she can’t get far with a broken foot. Any ideas of how to get her out would be greatly appreciated. Temporary housing available in Baton Rouge until friends can make arrangments to get her to California.

Mother, son may still be near Lakefront airport
My friend Debbie Schenck and her son Daniel are missing. Please
check their house at 7722 Alabama St.off of Haynes Blvd near the Lakefront
Airport.

Debbie has bad knees, a muscular problem and problems with depression and anxiety. Her youngest son was killed walking across the Seabrook Bridge last Sept. by a motorist driving 100 mph.

Debbie is 48 and medium build and about 5’6 or 5’7″ with blond hair. Her son
is 30 with brown hair and medium build and about 5’9″ . His name is Daniel.
The last time I spoke with her she was contemplating going to a Hotel on St.
Charles Ave that was taking in people with health problems. She said she
would go if they would let Daniel come with her. She also said she bought a
generator and would stay if Daniel was not allowed at the shelter. She also
has a small black dog named Shaggy ( I think a Schnauzer) that she would not
leave.

I don’t want to risk anyone’s life to go look for him to no avail, but the last we spoke, he said he was probably staying. My dad is worried sick since we haven’t heard from him since the storm.
