How are “we” going to respond to the death of mercenaries in Fallujah, Iraq, which happened to be followed by a horrific demonstration by people uninvolved in the attack itself? There is now talk by some people including Paul Bremer (“punish” was his choice of words) and the press of “retalation.”
Against whom? For which action? The apparent ambush of two carloads of mercenaries on their way to a job somewhere in a war zone, or the horrible mutilation of dead bodies by civilians uninvolved in the attack? I’m totally convinced that whoever fired the rpgs and machine guns fled the scene immediately so they could fight again. Then an angry mob of people took over and did the grisly acts taped by a news crew. Today General Mark Kimmitt, Marine commander in the area, promised to “retake the city” (for months the US has been keeping its military on the outside of town, due to extreme bad relations with civilians after a massacre committed by the 82nd Airborne in the center of Fallujah last year). How many uniformed Marines, sworn to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, will have to die in order to make the streets safe for mercenaries?
