We now have this Newsweek report from crumb-sniffer Isikoff which claims that Fitzgerald briefly stopped by the offices of James Sharp, Bush’s private lawyer, just before going into the courthouse on Friday and indicting Libby. The press had Libby and Rove staked out on Friday morning, even putting out in detail what time each of them left their homes; it was noted that Rove left earlier than usual. But look at this passage from the Friday morning not-for-TV “press gaggle” transcript with Scott McClellan:
Q Were Mr. Rove and Mr. Libby in senior staff this morning?
MR. McCLELLAN: They were both at the White House this morning and participating in meetings.
Q But specifically in senior staff?
MR. McCLELLAN: Well, I think Karl left his house a little bit later than normal, so he was in a little bit later. And Scooter did come to senior staff.
Q Has Karl informed anybody at the White House that he’s been informed that he is not to be indicted today, as his lawyer is telling others?
MR. McCLELLAN: All I know, Geoff, is that there’s a lot of speculation and I don’t have anything to add beyond that.
Why was Rove late for this meeting? Was he waiting in Sharp’s offices? Is this who Fitzgerald stopped by to talk to?
