Bush Vs. Reality

Let’s set aside the law and the Constitution here for a minute and talk about something a little bit less weighty but nevertheless important. Bush has spent his whole Presidency “creating new realities” as one of his flacks so famously said to David Suskind once. He thinks of himself as taking bold actions which change the perceptions of the people so much that it helps change the course of history itself. As we know, there are more and more stories about how he isolated, “in a bubble” etc. including the cover stories of both Time and Newsweek just a week ago that said exactly that. Well here’s something to chew on, the illegal spying is in my opinion the greatest conflict and test yet between the “reality” he wants to create and Reality itself. Which “reality” is going to win? Will he change the definition of what a President can do under the Constitution, or will he be stopped? His only way out of this is to convince people after the fact that he has new super powers no other President has ever had; on the other hand just stopping the continuing program is a defeat for him under the situation he has set up here. He doesn’t have to be impeached to lose.
