Let me start off by saying that everyone needs to see Bush’s historic press conference yesterday, especially the Q and A portion. If you don’t see it with your own eyes, you’ll have a hard problem understanding what’s going on in Washington, DC right now. We are in a constitutional crisis. Never before has a US President boasted that he will continue breaking the law after he has been caught. Having said this, here are two video clips from the press conference:
First, here is Peter Baker of the Washington Post asking a rational question and Bush losing his temper, followed by Bush becoming even snottier when the next question is relatively mild. Second, we have the next question which is a rather friendly one, and Bush’s anger rises even more in response. Note there is a reaction shot here which shows Karl Rove and Andrew Card both looking around trying to see who is snickering and giggling at the President. There is a woman in a red dress who I think is also on Bush’s staff, with a really grim stage smile on her face that seems to express a very high state of anxiety about Bush’s behavior, like she’s watching him do a very difficult trick on the trapeze or something. Bush is barely, barely coping in terms of not totally snapping during this thing and you can see it on their faces.
These are not the clips they showed you on the news, they are unedited segments of what really happened.
