He just held a press appearance simply to drop that hint. With Bush scheduled to fly in to Illinois soon, Hastert is desperately trying to buy some time by mumbling a response to the avalanche of devastating stories that came out this weekend, detailing his deep knowledge of Foley’s actions for years. It was a very bizarre little conversation with reporters, conducted with a graveyard as the backdrop. It is absolutely inevitable that he’ll step down, and dragging it out just continues to make it worse. My big gripe is that the media won’t make more of how embarrassing and damaging it is for the GOP that he clings to power. Instead they are making room for Hastert to take all the time in the world to quit, and looking the other way at the damage it’s doing to the GOP.
UPDATE: Very good analysis and video of the three-minute long debacle “press conference” done only with local media.
Oh, and 60 bound, gagged, shot and tortured bodies were found in Iraq.
