Maliki Orders US Military Out of Sadr City

And the Americans comply. The Sadr City siege is over, and Baghdad officially can never be secured, now, by definition. The Iraqi police are totally riddled with infiltrating militiamen, the Washington Post reports today.

Supporters of anti-American Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr celebrated in the streets of Sadr City, bastion of his Mehdi Army. An aide hailed the end of a “barbaric siege” begun to help find a kidnapped U.S. soldier possibly being held by militiamen.

He’s as good as dead. And an untold number of US troops who fought since Thursday to save him from the kidnapping militia leader ARE dead. The Mogadishu moment has been reached, the Iraq experiment is officially a lost cause.
