From documents released in the Libby trial, we learn that both the State Department (previously known) and the CIA (not previously known) were in possession of the forged documents (whose origin is still a mystery) that claimed that Iraq tried to buy uranium from Niger. There is still no explanation why Bush nevertheless insisted on making this false claim in his 2003 State of the Union address; both State and CIA concluded the papers were forgeries, as early as October 2002.
