John Conyers, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, who voted as a member of that committee in 1974 to impeach Richard Nixon, is meeting right now with White House Counsel Fred Fielding, who was one of Nixon’s defense attorneys. No, no Watergate-type scandal here, folks, keep moving along, nothing to see. Conyers’ Committee will meet at 9:15 tomorrow to subpoena Rove and Miers and many others. The Senate has just passed a bill stripping the Specter-inserted provision that allowed a bypass of Senate confirmation for new US Attorneys; and Bush gave the desperate Alberto Gonzales a tepid phone call, not a face to face meeting or photo op, to show his “support” for the Attorney General.
