MSNBC just reports this over the air:
Fred Fielding, he’s the White House counsel, he was just here in the House of Representatives meeting with the House Judiciary Committee. He made the following offer to the Congress, both House and Senate…he said Rove and Harriet Mier would be offered to the Committees for their testimony in the Alberto Gonzales and federal prosecutors scandal. However, he said it would be unsworn testimony, not under oath, behind closed doors and no trancript would be permitted.
I expect subpoenas to be issued by noon tomorrow.
UPDATE: WHITE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE
*THE PRESIDENT WILL MAKE A STATEMENT ON THE U.S. ATTORNEY MATTER SHORTLY AFTER RETURNING FROM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI AT 5:45 PM, EDT, TODAY, MARCH 20, 2007, IN THE DIPLOMATIC RECEPTION ROOM
This will be Bush’s attempt to hijack/control the evening news and the news cycle for the rest of the night. Or perhaps Gonzales will go.
UPDATE: Think Progress has a brief appearance by Schumer, who, with Conyers standing by, explains Fielding’s offer. Compare their headline to mine.
And here is a reminder why all of this matters. It is simply not true that the President “can fire whomever he wants” when it comes to US Attorneys. He cannot fire them for illegal reasons, and there are plenty of reasons that would be illegal.
