Basra, which has no US troop presence, is in civil war. This is where some 80% of Iraq’s exported oil originates. Moqtada Al-Sadr has called for a general strike, and closed off Sadr City in Baghdad. Many people are dead in the fighting. The US does not have a chance of being able to stop this fighting, if the Iraqis are determined to continue it. 160,000 troops is not enough, 200,000 or even 300,000 troops are not enough. And there is no remaining way for the US to increase their troop presence now, even if they wanted to. This is the reality.
