In a small ceremony a few minutes ago attended by some 400 people, Governor Brad Henry of Oklahoma signed an executive order proclaiming “Do You Realize??” by the Flaming Lips as the “Official State Rock Song.” Bassist Mike Ivins wore a “Ghostbusters” T-shirt under his jacket, whose circle-with-a-slash symbol looked vaguely like a hammer and sickle design. Speaking for the group (as he always does), Wayne Coyne said that he hoped the declaration of “State Rock Song” would help Oklahoma to be known for “more than just the Sooners and Toby Keith,” but also for its less-than-conventional musical scene. To add to the atmosphere, the Governor also declared April 28, 2009 as “Flaming Lips Day” in the State of Oklahoma. Score one for the good guys in Oklahoma.
