The late Senator Moynihan began chronicling these statistics a long time ago and they have always fascinated me. The amounts each year fluctuate a little bit, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen an individual state move noticeably up or down in the relative ranking. One way of evaluating this map: anti-Federal tax whiners could have a point in the light grey states; in the dark states they should kindly shut up.
