New York Times Removes Report of “large, vertical crack” in Reactor Vessel

Why did they remove this quote? I don’t know but it was there in the newspaper in their main stop story.

I too read that anonymous source who claims there is a “up and down” crack in the reactor, but wonder who if anyone has been close enough to see such a crack and how they would do so?

More disturbing is why the quote was removed – was it pressure from GE? The government of Japan, trying to stave off a panic? An editorial decision based on fact checking of the source’s contacts?

This story from the UK guardian has a more nuanced take on the possible crack. Regardless, the fact remains that there is some sort of a very dangerous leak or else the water in the basement would not be the way it is.
