For interfering with a union vote that was encouraged by VW management. I sincerely hope that VW deals with this situation responsibly by building a new plant that is inside the US, in a non “right to work” state where closed union shops are the law.
Technically ‘closed shops’ means you have to join the union before you get the job, and they are illegal in every state of the union. But of course I share your disappointment in this vote. The union and management both complied with ‘neutrality’ but the rightwing politicians did the unionbusting dirty work. And people should resist the temptation of blaming backwards racist southern workers who dont know better…this was a sophisticated fearmongering political campaign and unfortunately enough workers took the bait to make it a success….la lucha continua….the struggle will go on
You’re completely correct; I should have said “Union shop” which has been the correct term since 1947. I would also add that I think there is a possibility that workers were deceived into thinking that they could vote “no” on the union, VW would receive the subsidies and tax breaks afterwards (as promised by Bob Corker), and that once they were secured, the workers could hold another election and unionize. I still hope that VW will employ union workers wherever they choose to build next, because they are going to build another North American plant.
