Today, reporters found masses of wildlife killed on Grand Isle, Louisiana, including these hermit crabs. The pelican is Louisiana’s state bird and was on the endangered species list until last year. Soon it will be back on the list. In this photo, the dead pelican is being tagged, bagged and taken away.
At the very least. That is 3.9 million gallons a day. Congressman Ed Markey has forced BP to agree to pressure and allow a live internet video stream of the well leaking oil into the Gulf of Mexico. As soon as it is technically possible, this blog will carry the live video nonstop until the pollution stops. These kids are very brave. If they did this in Phoenix, Sheriff Arpaio would definitely rush down there, arrest them, throw them into one of his outdoor mistreatment camps, and have them deported. It’s headed for the Gulf coast of Florida, and will travel to the Atlantic coast.

Well done. Nevertheless, in a contentious meeting on the day of the explosion, BP overruled Transocean and ordered the early removal of mud from the well, which led to the explosion. This is all in a new 60 Minutes story that just aired on CBS (watch the video), heavily sourced from the chief IT worker on the rig, who jumped 100 feet into flaming oil to survive. The oil is flowing ten times faster than admitted, say scientists based on new data, at 70,000 barrels a day. Over three times the size of the Exxon Valdez spill has already been released, and it’s a new Exxon Valdez every four days. Kudos to NPR for running this story, which will almost certainly force BP to respond by releasing more of the hundreds of hours of video they possess that can solve the uncertainty. If British Petroleum refuses, you can consider the NPR story officially confirmed. UPDATE: Yes obviously this supersedes the previous headline from earlier in the day, which came from estimates based on previous data. And not 1,000 either, as the Coast Guard claimed. Or zero, as they claimed on the second day. |
